Gaddi

Distribution : The breed is also known as Himalayan and is found in Chamba, Kangra, Kulu, Bilaspur, Simla, Kinnaur, Lahaul and Sipti in Himachal Pardesh and part of Jammu hills. In Uttar Pardesh also the breed is reared at Dehradun, Nainital, Tehrigarhwal and Chamoli hill districts. During winter, the herds graze in the valleys, while in summer they move to higher altitudes where the lush green grass springs up. They are well built, sturdy and can easily move to long distances. Each goats transports about 8 kg of merchandise.

Conformation

The goats are medium sized, coat color is mostly white but black and brown and combinations of these are also seen. Both sexes have large horns, directed upward and backward and occasionally twisted. Ears are medium, long and drooping. Skin is very tough, covered with coarse long hair measuring 7-10 inches. The udder is small and rounded with pointed teats.

Performance

Average fleece yield per clip is about 300 grams and fiber diameter is 75 micron.
